Punctuation Checker

Fix the marks, keep the words

Fix commas, apostrophes, semicolons, quotation marks and dashes without rewording your text, with a reason for every fix.

A punctuation checker finds and fixes punctuation mistakes without rewriting your sentences. Paste your text and Real Write returns a corrected version plus a list of every punctuation-only fix — commas, apostrophes, semicolons, colons, quotation marks, hyphens and dashes — each with a one-line reason, so you can see exactly what changed and why.

How the Punctuation Checker works

  1. Paste your text, or upload a .docx or .pdf file.
  2. Press Check Punctuation.
  3. Read the list of fixes: each one shows the original, the correction and a short reason.
  4. Copy the corrected text, or apply only the fixes you agree with in your own document.

Worked example

Input

Illustrative result

It's been a long week; the team's report is finally done, and we're sending it to Sarah's office today.

Illustrative check with four fixes and no words changed: the contraction it's, a semicolon to repair the comma splice, a comma instead of a semicolon before and, and the possessive Sarah's.

What people use it for

  • Fixing comma splices and missing commas in essays and reports
  • Checking apostrophes in possessives and contractions, such as its and it's
  • Cleaning up quotation marks and dialogue punctuation in fiction
  • Choosing between hyphens, en dashes and em dashes in headlines and copy
  • Giving emails, applications and cover letters a last punctuation pass

Frequently asked questions

What does the punctuation checker fix?
Commas (including comma splices and missing commas after introductory phrases), apostrophes, semicolons and colons, quotation marks, end punctuation, and hyphens versus dashes. Spelling and grammar outside punctuation are left alone; use the grammar checker for those.
Will it reword my sentences?
No. The checker is instructed to change punctuation only. Your words, word order and tone stay as you wrote them, so the corrected text should read like yours with the marks fixed.
Does it follow US or UK punctuation rules?
It keeps the conventions your text already uses where it can, such as single or double quotation marks and whether you use the serial (Oxford) comma. If you follow a style guide such as APA or Chicago, check the fixes against it.
Can a punctuation checker be wrong?
Yes. Some punctuation depends on meaning — a comma can change what a sentence says — and AI can misread your intent. Review each fix and its reason before you accept it.
Is the punctuation checker free?
Yes. Each check uses one of your free daily AI generations, with no signup. A Pro plan removes the daily limit.
